Road crash on Nakuru-Eldoret Highway leaves six dead, five injured
An Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official has died following a tragic road accident on the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway in Kenya.The incident occurred on Friday, July 3, 2026, as the official, identified as Betty Rotich, was returning to Eldoret after attending a mental wellness workshop for IEBC staff held at Sawela Lodges in Naivasha.
According to family accounts, they lost contact with her at around 8pm, and later received confirmation that she had been involved in a serious crash.Police reports indicate that the accident involved a matatu belonging to Eldoret Crossroad Sacco, which was travelling towards Nakuru from Eldoret.A trailer reportedly ascending the Nyanja slope swerved and collided head-on with the matatu.The impact was severe, leading to multiple casualties at the scene.Five people were reported to have died on the spot, while two others later succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment.Several more passengers sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for medical care.
The deceased’s family, including her sister Edna Rotich and brother Caleb Rotich, confirmed her death and described the emotional distress caused by the incident.The family later identified her body at Londiani Sub-County Hospital mortuary.They also recounted the severity of her injuries, noting that she suffered broken legs and head and facial injuries.Moiben MP Phylis Bartoo expressed condolences to the family and described the loss as painful to both relatives and the wider community.She called for comfort and strength for the bereaved family during this difficult period.The family has since begun funeral arrangements at their home in Kaptagat, with relatives and friends gathering in mourning.Caleb Rotich also urged authorities to accelerate the expansion of the Rironi–Malaba Highway to improve road safety and reduce future accidents.
