Monsoon advances to Delhi as heavy rainfall disrupts Mumbai and other regions across India
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, warning of moderate to intense rainfall at isolated locations.
Mumbai has been experiencing continuous heavy monsoon showers, with the city recording significant rainfall in a 24-hour period between Thursday morning and Friday morning.
The eastern suburbs received over 100 mm of rain, while the western suburbs also reported similarly high levels, indicating sustained heavy precipitation across the metropolitan region. The persistent rains have led to multiple rain-related incidents. In Mumbra, a 17-year-old girl tragically died after suffering an electric shock in a waterlogged area outside her home.Reports suggest that she came into contact with electricity that had leaked into standing water near a building gate.Authorities have registered a case of alleged negligence against officials of a power distribution company in connection with the incident.
In another separate incident earlier, a 26-year-old worker in Bhiwandi also died due to electrocution during rain-related conditions, highlighting ongoing safety risks during the monsoon season.Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has officially arrived in Delhi, marking its onset five days later than the normal date of June 27.Meteorological officials noted that this is the first instance since 2021 that the monsoon has reached Delhi in July. The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms across parts of the national capital.
The arrival of the monsoon brings relief from heat but also raises concerns about urban flooding and weather-related disruptions across northern and western India.Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as heavy rains affect transport, infrastructure, and daily life in several regions.
