On Saturday evening, residents across Delhi-NCR received widespread emergency alerts on their mobile phones warning of severe weather conditions, causing phones to buzz with notifications titled ‘Extremely severe alert’ in some areas such as Noida.

The alerts, issued in both Hindi and English depending on the device settings, warned of an approaching thunderstorm accompanied by lightning, heavy rain, and hailstorm activity expected within the next three hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several parts of Delhi, including the north, northwest, west, and southwest districts, indicating the possibility of severe thunderstorms with wind speeds reaching up to 100 km/h, along with dust storms and hail.Other regions of the capital were placed under orange and yellow alerts based on intensity risk levels.

Nearby areas such as Noida and Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh also received red and orange warnings, while Gurugram in Haryana was placed under a yellow alert.The weather system brought temporary relief from the intense heat, with light rain reported in parts of the region.

IMD forecasts indicated that very light to light rain and thunderstorms would continue into Sunday with wind speeds of 40–50 km/h, followed by partly cloudy conditions in the coming days.However, temperatures are expected to rise again after June 1, potentially reaching 40°C to 42°C by early June.Visual reports from neighbouring Rajasthan also showed intense dust storms sweeping across regions like Churu and Bikaner.Authorities advised residents to stay cautious due to the risk of strong winds, lightning, and hail during the alert period.
