India and China Review Border Stability in Constructive Talks on LAC in Beijing

India and China have held fresh diplomatic discussions focusing on the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), describing the engagement as “constructive” and “forward-looking”.The talks took place during the 35th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs in Beijing.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, both sides reviewed the current situation in border areas and expressed satisfaction with the progress made in maintaining peace and tranquillity along the frontier.Officials noted that this stability has contributed to a gradual normalisation of bilateral relations between the two Asian neighbours.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions that began in June 2020 after a violent clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh. The incident resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers, while China acknowledged casualties on its side as well.Following the confrontation, both countries significantly increased troop deployment and military infrastructure along the LAC.

Over the past few years, India and China have engaged in multiple rounds of military and diplomatic negotiations aimed at disengagement and de-escalation.

A key development was reported in October 2024 when both sides reached an agreement on patrolling arrangements in certain friction points, leading to partial disengagement in eastern Ladakh. However, areas such as Demchok and Depsang have remained sensitive and unresolved for longer periods.Despite these challenges, recent statements indicate a thaw in relations, with both governments highlighting “good momentum” in ties since 2024.

The latest talks reinforce ongoing efforts to maintain peace at the border while cautiously rebuilding broader diplomatic engagement between India and China.
