Albanese highlights India’s economic rise and strengthens Australia-India partnership ahead of Modi visit

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has highlighted India’s rapid economic growth and reaffirmed the strengthening strategic partnership between Australia and India.Speaking in the Australian Parliament in Canberra, Albanese described India’s rise as an “extraordinary opportunity” for the Indo-Pacific region.

He noted that India, already the world’s most populous country, is projected to become the third-largest economy within this decade, underscoring its growing global influence.

He said this economic trajectory presents significant opportunities for regional cooperation, especially as Australia identifies itself as both a Pacific and Indian Ocean nation.

Albanese also emphasised the importance of the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), signed in 2022, which has significantly enhanced bilateral trade relations.

He added that ties between the two countries continue to deepen not only in trade, but also through culture, education, sport, and people-to-people connections, particularly cricket and the large Indian diaspora in Australia.

Recounting his personal connection with India, Albanese mentioned his early travels in 1991 and his subsequent visits as Prime Minister, stating that travelling across India offers a deeper understanding of its diversity and warmth. He expressed his anticipation of hosting Prime Minister Narendra Modi again in Australia, describing it as a continued privilege.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the contributions of the Indian-Australian community, calling them integral to Australia’s economic and social fabric. He stressed that his government would support their interests and reject any divisive narratives.

The remarks come amid ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two countries, including recent Quad-related meetings and high-level ministerial dialogues, reflecting a growing Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in the Indo-Pacific region.
