India and Russia review expansion of maritime, defence and strategic cooperation in Moscow talks

India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval held a series of high-level meetings in Moscow with senior Russian officials, including Nikolai Patrushev, Aide to the President and Chairman of Russia’s Maritime Board, to review ongoing bilateral cooperation in maritime and defence sectors.

Both sides assessed progress on key initiatives discussed during Patrushev’s visit to New Delhi in November 2025, with a focus on expanding collaboration in maritime connectivity, shipbuilding, defence partnerships, and training of seafarers for operations in polar regions.The discussions also covered broader regional and global security developments.

During his visit, Doval also met Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, where they reviewed cooperation across defence, energy, space, and other strategic sectors.

The Russian side additionally facilitated visits to key institutions including the National Space Centre and Roscosmos’ Joint Industry Information Centre, highlighting technological and industrial collaboration.

Separately, Doval met Myanmar’s National Security Advisor Tin Aung San on the sidelines of the International Security Forum in Moscow, discussing security cooperation, defence ties, and regional connectivity.

He also engaged with Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, reviewing ongoing cooperation in defence, energy, and economic domains, along with preparations for upcoming multilateral engagements such as the BRICS NSA meeting in New Delhi and the BIMSTEC NSA meeting.

In his address at the forum, Doval stressed the importance of ensuring uninterrupted maritime trade through key international waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.

He expressed concern over disruptions in global energy supplies due to regional tensions, particularly in West Asia, and emphasised India’s support for diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and restoring regional stability.His remarks highlighted the fragility of global maritime security and its impact on the world economy.
