India's 6th National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6), conducted across 715 districts between 2023-2024, reveals significant improvements in public health and socio-economic indicators.The survey highlights a 65% reduction in maternal mortality rate (MMR) since 2004-06, dropping to 87 per 100 000 live births.Infant mortality rate (IMR) also fell from 39 to 24.Institutional deliveries reached 90.6%, skilled birth attendance hit 91.3%, and full immunisation coverage rose to 87.1%.Antenatal care access improved to 95.9% for pregnant women.Social demographics show a stable total fertility rate (TFR) at the replacement level of 2.0.Spousal violence among married women declined from 37% to 22.3%.Financial inclusion surged to 89% of women owning bank accounts, while electricity coverage reached 98.3% and drinking water access stood at 96.5%.Health insurance coverage expanded twelvefold to 60.2% of the population.The progress is attributed to a robust primary healthcare network with over 187 000 health and wellness centres, 1.03 million Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers, and 467 million telemedicine consultations.
The findings underscore India's demographic transition and focus on elevating healthcare quality, improving nutrition, and managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
