Indian-origin mother and son from Haryana elected mayors in UK councils

A remarkable achievement has been recorded by a family originally from Haryana, India, as a mother and son duo have been elected as mayors in the United Kingdom within a span of one week. The family, belonging to the Dahiya household from Rohtak with ancestral roots in Sonipat district, moved to the UK in 2013.Twenty-three-year-old Tushar Kumar and his mother Parveen Rani have both attained significant civic leadership positions in UK local governance.

Parveen Rani has been elected as the first Indian-origin mayor of Hertsmere Borough Council, while her son Tushar Kumar has become the youngest Indian-origin mayor in the UK, taking charge of the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council.According to family accounts, Tushar was elected mayor on May 13, while his mother assumed office on May 20.

The family migrated to the UK without specific long-term plans, but both mother and son gradually became involved in community service and local civic engagement.

Tushar began his political journey early, becoming a councillor at the age of 20 while studying in London, and later serving as deputy mayor before being elected mayor in 2025.Parveen Rani has also held several responsibilities including roles related to streets, parks, leisure, culture, and deputy mayoral duties.

Both have been actively involved in community initiatives, including teaching Hindi free of cost to UK-born residents and working with charitable organisations. The family maintains strong ties with their roots in Haryana and continues to visit India regularly.

Tushar, who studied at King’s College London, has also emphasised the importance of youth participation in public service, stating that age should not be a barrier to entering community leadership roles. The development has been widely seen as a proud moment for the Indian diaspora in the UK.
