Thiruvananthapuram Corporation introduces 'Mayor Care' initiative to support school students

The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has launched a new civic initiative called ‘Mayor Care’, aimed at supporting school students from economically weaker backgrounds. The programme was inaugurated by Mayor V.V.Rajesh, who also oversaw the distribution of school bags and study materials as part of its first phase. The initiative focuses on students in the 5–16 age group studying in government and aided schools.

According to the Mayor, the programme was conceived after the Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in the Corporation, with the idea of involving political representatives, civic employees, and sectoral experts in designing long-term development programmes for the city.

A key feature of ‘Mayor Care’ is its reliance on contributions from well-wishers and institutions rather than using the Corporation’s own funds or government allocations, in order to avoid affecting existing welfare schemes.

The civic body reported that more than 5,000 school kits were collected within two to three days, reflecting strong public participation and trust in the initiative. The distribution process is being coordinated with the General Education Department, which is responsible for identifying eligible beneficiaries.

The Mayor highlighted that the timing of the initiative coincides with the reopening of schools and is intended to ensure that students begin the academic year with adequate learning materials.

He also noted a long-term vision behind the programme, linking it to India’s centenary of independence in 2047, with the aim of nurturing a generation capable of contributing meaningfully to society.

Distribution of kits will be carried out through schools, with ward councillors present during the process to ensure transparency and community involvement. The Corporation has also expressed hope of expanding the programme in the coming year to cover all students within its jurisdiction.
