Scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) have developed the world's most detailed 3D cellular atlas of the human brainstem, linking whole-brain MRI views to individual neurons across over 500 tissue sections.

This free online tool, named Anchor, provides unprecedented insights into the brainstem's structure and function, which controls critical life-sustaining processes like breathing, heartbeat, and sleep.

The atlas, built using high-resolution microscope images, identifies over 200 clusters of brain cells and nerve pathways, with eight chemical markers helping distinguish different cell types.

Researchers emphasize its potential to advance understanding of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, stroke, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) by comparing healthy and diseased tissue at the cellular level.

The tool allows users to zoom from the entire brainstem down to individual neurons while maintaining spatial relationships, offering neuroscientists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons a valuable reference for research and clinical applications.

By mapping the brainstem's intricate networks, the atlas could improve surgical precision and contribute to breakthroughs in treating complex neurological conditions.
