SAPS forensic services captain to appear in court over alleged interference in murder investigations
South African and regional authorities are reportedly making significant progress in the investigation into the brutal killing of an elderly couple in the Kruger National Park earlier in May 2026.The victims, identified as retired couple Ernst and Dina Marais, were discovered by tourists in a remote northern section of the park on 20 May.Their deaths prompted a major cross-border investigation involving South African police and Mozambican counterparts.
According to sources close to the investigation, the couple’s hijacked vehicle was later recovered in Xai Xai in Mozambique, approximately 200km north of Maputo and about 350km from the park, suggesting the suspects fled across the border shortly after the crime.
While police have not officially commented, citing the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation, it is believed that several individuals have already been questioned in connection with the case.
The recovery of the vehicle is seen as a key breakthrough, helping investigators trace the movements of the suspects and strengthen coordination between law enforcement agencies in both countries.
Family members of the victims have expressed appreciation for the swift and coordinated response from police, noting that efforts to track down those responsible appear to be intensifying.
However, the family has also raised concern over the circulation of graphic footage of the crime scene on social media, describing it as deeply distressing.
A nephew and family spokesperson, Hjalmer van Gesselen, said the family was horrified by the leak and urged respect for their privacy during this difficult time. The investigation remains ongoing.
