Investigation advances into murder of elderly couple in Kruger National Park as suspects are pursued across borders
A captain attached to the South African Police Service (SAPS) Forensic Science Laboratory is expected to appear before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday following his arrest on charges of defeating the ends of justice.
The arrest was carried out on Friday at the officer’s residence in Pretoria during a targeted operation by the Commission’s Recommendations Task Team.
The case forms part of a broader investigation into alleged interference and irregularities linked to sensitive and high-profile murder investigations currently under scrutiny by the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, investigators have linked the officer to allegations involving the manipulation or mishandling of forensic evidence connected to several prominent murder cases.
Authorities also confirmed that during the arrest operation, state property was confiscated, including ballistic reports, ammunition, and other evidential materials believed to be relevant to active investigations. These items are now expected to be analysed as part of the ongoing probe into possible misconduct within forensic and investigative processes.
The developments stem from concerns raised before the Madlanga Commission regarding alleged corruption and procedural failures within certain elements of law enforcement. The commission has been examining claims that improper handling of evidence may have compromised the integrity of criminal investigations.
The accused captain is set to face formal charges of defeating the ends of justice, while further investigations continue to determine the extent of alleged interference and whether other individuals may be implicated.
