IPL rules clarify eligibility of late injury replacements for retention ahead of auctions

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has clarified an important rule regarding injury replacements and their eligibility for retention ahead of future auctions.

According to the IPL’s regulations, if a player gets injured during or before the 12th league match of a season, both the injured player and his replacement become eligible for retention in the next auction cycle.

This rule has gained attention after a series of late-season squad changes made by franchises during the closing stages of the league phase of IPL 2026.Recently, Mumbai Indians announced replacements in Mahipal Lomror and Ruchit Ahir for Quinton de Kock and Raj Bawa respectively.

Rajasthan Royals brought in Emanjot Chahal as a replacement for Ravi Singh, while Kolkata Knight Riders signed Luvnith Sisodia in place of Matheesha Pathirana.

Although these announcements were made after the completion of the 12th league match for some teams, the IPL confirmed that the injuries were officially communicated to the league authorities before the end of each franchise’s 12th fixture, thereby making the replacements valid under the rules.

As a result, all these replacement players, along with the injured cricketers they replaced, remain eligible for retention ahead of the IPL 2027 auction. This provision has gradually become a strategic tool for franchises.

Teams are increasingly viewing late injury replacements not only as short-term cover but also as potential long-term assets who can be retained without entering competitive bidding at the auction.

The article also references earlier instances, such as Chennai Super Kings signing Dewald Brevis in IPL 2025 as a replacement and later retaining both him and Gurjapneet Singh, highlighting how this rule has influenced squad-building strategies across seasons.
