Behind-the-scenes portraits of Steven Spielberg with E.T. during the 1982 production and promotion
On the set of the 1955 television series 'Sheena, Queen of the Jungle,' actress Irish McCalla formed a memorable partnership with Neal the Chimp, credited as 'Chim.' Neal appeared in 21 of the series' 26 episodes and was trained by Howard Bryant specifically for the show.
Their interactions, often captured in candid photos at the World Jungle Compound in Thousand Oaks, California, became a key element of the series' charm. The photos frequently showed McCalla holding Neal's hand or peeking through jungle foliage, reflecting their natural rapport.McCalla performed nearly all of her own stunts in the first half of the series, including vine-swinging and wrestling mechanical alligators. Her demanding stunts eventually led to a serious accident, breaking her arm and injuring her knee.
Due to her unique height and athletic build, the production struggled to find a female stunt double and ultimately employed male stuntmen in blonde wigs and leopard-skin costumes to substitute for her.Neal the Chimp served as Sheena's loyal companion, helping her protect the jungle from poachers and treasure hunters.
The behind-the-scenes photos provide a glimpse into the playful and dedicated atmosphere during the production of this low-budget but enduring pulp-adventure series.
