Pakistan reports limited progress in negotiations with Chinese power producers over tariff discounts
In Islamabad, the Capital Territory Administration has implemented new energy-saving measures due to rising fuel prices and supply issues caused by the US-Iran conflict.Starting 1 June 2026, all major markets and shopping malls in Islamabad are required to close by 8pm.Essential services, however, are exempt from this regulation.Pharmacies, hospitals, medical stores, petrol pumps, and CNG stations will continue to operate as usual.
Restaurants, food outlets, tandoors, grocery shops, bakeries, fruit and vegetable stores, as well as wedding halls, lawns, and marquees, must close by 10pm.Officials say this step is aimed at reducing electricity consumption and managing commercial activity more efficiently during peak hours.
This latest notification comes after temporary relaxations in business hours across the country, which had allowed longer operating times for markets, malls, and restaurants.
The decision reflects broader national efforts to balance economic activity with energy conservation, particularly as Pakistan relies heavily on imported fossil fuels, including liquefied natural gas, whose prices have surged due to Middle East tensions and disruptions in crude oil shipping routes.
