Iran Targets US Air Base After Weekend Strikes on Iranian Military Installations
Israeli forces have captured the historic Beaufort Castle and the surrounding strategic ridge in southern Lebanon during an expanded ground offensive against Hezbollah.According to reports, this marks Israel’s deepest military advance into Lebanese territory since its withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000.The medieval fortress overlooks large parts of southern Lebanon and has long held military significance due to its elevated position.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced that troops had crossed the Litani River and taken control of the Beaufort Ridge, describing it as a key location for protecting northern Israeli communities and military operations.
Israeli authorities also issued evacuation warnings to civilians across a broad area south of the Zahrani River, stating that Hezbollah-linked positions were being targeted.
The move drew strong criticism from Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, who accused Israel of implementing a scorched-earth policy and collective punishment by destroying towns, villages and civilian infrastructure. He called for an end to the fighting and expressed concern over the displacement of local residents.
Meanwhile, military delegations from Israel and Lebanon met in Washington for US-mediated security discussions, with further political talks expected.Despite a ceasefire that officially began on April 17, both Israel and Hezbollah continue to accuse each other of repeated violations.
Hezbollah stated that it was resisting Israeli advances near several southern Lebanese towns and claimed Israeli troops had not fully secured those areas.
The group also launched attacks into northern Israel, while the Israeli military reported rocket fire and the death of one soldier in a Hezbollah drone attack.
Lebanese health authorities say thousands of people have been killed in Israeli attacks since early March, highlighting the continuing human cost of the conflict.
