Japan secure dominant 4-0 victory over Tunisia to boost World Cup hopes

Japan produced an impressive performance to defeat Tunisia 4-0 in their Group F FIFA World Cup 2026 clash, a historic fixture that marked the 1,000th match in World Cup history.

Hajime Moriyasu’s side took control early when Daichi Kamada opened the scoring after only four minutes, finishing off a well-worked attacking move created by Keito Nakamura.Tunisia struggled to cope with Japan’s high pressing, movement and possession throughout the match and rarely threatened in attack.

Japan continued to dominate after the opening goal and doubled their advantage in the 31st minute through Ayase Ueda, who struck a low shot into the far corner from outside the box.

Tunisia, already under pressure after a heavy defeat to Sweden in their opening match, failed to establish any rhythm despite the arrival of new coach Herve Renard.

The Asian side put the result beyond doubt in the second half when Kamada provided an incisive pass that allowed Junya Ito to break clear and score in the 69th minute.Ueda then completed his brace six minutes from time with a superb header from Kaishu Sano’s delivery. The result made Japan the first Asian nation to score four goals in a World Cup match.Ueda said he felt he had redeemed himself after disappointment at the previous tournament and was pleased to contribute to an important victory.Moriyasu praised Kamada and Ito for stepping up in the absence of Takefusa Kubo, highlighting Kamada’s effectiveness in a more advanced role.

The win moved Japan onto four points alongside the Netherlands, who defeated Sweden 5-1, while Tunisia became the third team eliminated from the tournament after Haiti and Turkey.
