On July 16, 2026, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers from the Rea Vaya Unit rescued an abandoned newborn baby girl in the inner city.

The incident occurred around 11:45pm when officers conducting routine patrols near Saratoga Avenue and Hadfield Street were alerted by members of the public about a baby crying in nearby veld.Upon investigation, they found the infant, dressed in baby clothing, placed inside a plastic bag and abandoned.Officers immediately secured the baby, contacted emergency medical services, and transported her to Hillbrow Clinic, where she was confirmed healthy.The baby was then taken to Hillbrow station, where a child abandonment case was officially opened.The infant is now in temporary care at a registered welfare facility.The incident highlights the critical role of community vigilance and law enforcement in protecting vulnerable lives.The JMPD spokesperson emphasized the officers' swift response and collaboration with medical teams to ensure the baby's safety.This case underscores the ongoing challenges of child abandonment and the importance of systemic support for at-risk children.
