Four Employees Convicted in R800,000 Burial Fund Fraud Scheme
A 39-year-old man from Eersterust, Kamar Davids, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted of two violent robberies targeting e-hailing drivers in Pretoria.
The Pretoria magistrate’s court found him guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances, including the use of firearms and threats against victims.Davids and an accomplice attacked two drivers in separate incidents in November 2023, stealing their belongings through violent means. The first robbery occurred when they pointed a gun at the driver, assaulted him, and fled after stealing his possessions. The second incident was interrupted by police, but Davids was arrested and has remained in custody.During the trial, Davids denied the charges, but the prosecution relied on victim testimonies to secure the conviction. The court rejected mitigation arguments citing his lack of remorse and the growing trend of such crimes against e-hailing drivers. The National Prosecuting Authority emphasized the need for strong sentences to deter similar offenses, highlighting the victims’ right to safety. The magistrate noted the increasing frequency of these attacks, stating that victims were merely trying to earn a living when targeted. The sentence aligns with the prescribed minimum, reflecting the severity of the crimes and the court’s commitment to justice.
