Kano State governor launches anti-drug emergency to curb trafficking and abuse

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has declared a public safety emergency to tackle drug abuse, implementing strict measures to curb illicit drug trafficking and consumption.

The executive orders prohibit the sale, distribution, and abuse of illegal substances, as well as the sale of unregistered pharmaceutical products without a prescription.

Movement in areas identified as drug hotspots will be restricted from 6 PM to 10 AM daily, and security agencies are authorized to stop, search, arrest, and prosecute suspected drug traffickers.Certificates of Occupancy for properties used in drug activities will be revoked to dismantle criminal networks.

A multi-agency Anti-Substance Abuse Task Force has been established to enforce these measures, backed by legal provisions from the Kano State Penal Code Law.Yusuf highlighted that drug abuse threatens public safety, contributing to violence, family breakdown, and economic hardship.

The task force will map and dismantle Daba gang hideouts, destroy drug dens, and collaborate with security agencies, traditional leaders, and civil society to restore peace.The measures aim to address the growing drug menace through strict enforcement, public awareness, and rehabilitation efforts.
