Sir Keir Starmer made his final appearance at Prime Minister’s Questions before leaving office, marking the end of his political career with an emotional farewell in the House of Commons.During the session, Labour MPs, opposition leaders and colleagues from across Parliament paid tribute to his leadership and public service.
Labour MP Carolyn Harris became emotional as she thanked Starmer for his leadership, praising his decency, courage and the impact of his government on children and the country's standing internationally.At the conclusion of the session, Labour MPs broke with convention by applauding him, while he received a standing ovation as he left the chamber.
In his closing remarks, Starmer reflected on leading Labour from its 2019 election defeat to victory in 2024 and said he believed he was leaving the country in a better condition than when he entered office.He confirmed he would give his successor, Andy Burnham, his wholehearted support, offering advice privately rather than publicly.Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch paid tribute to Starmer and thanked his wife and children for the sacrifices they had made during his premiership.
Starmer, in turn, publicly thanked Badenoch for her personal kindness during difficult moments, including after an attack on his family home and following the death of his brother.
The session also included lighter moments, such as exchanges with Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey about Chessington World of Adventures and humorous recollections of an incident during a school visit.Both Starmer and Badenoch also paid tribute to former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe following her reported murder.Starmer concluded by thanking his colleagues, supporters and family, telling his wife and children, 'I love you.Goodbye.'
