Kenya and Kuwait clarify status of domestic worker recruitment amid misinformation reports

The Kenyan government has clarified that Kuwait has not introduced any new ban on Kenyan workers, dismissing widespread media reports that suggested otherwise.

According to Labour and Skills Development Principal Secretary Shadrack Mwadime, recent claims circulating in the media were based on a misunderstanding of a communication issued by Kuwaiti authorities.

He emphasized that the announcement from Kuwait does not amount to a new restriction targeting Kenyan workers, but rather reflects the existing regulatory framework governing domestic labour recruitment in the Gulf country.

The government further explained that Kenya itself voluntarily suspended the deployment of domestic workers to Kuwait nearly ten years ago, and that this position has not changed. As such, there is no new policy action affecting Kenyan domestic workers specifically.

The clarification also highlighted that the perceived ban applies only to domestic workers and does not affect other categories of Kenyan professionals who continue to seek employment opportunities in Kuwait under the legal frameworks of both countries.

Officials noted that Kenya and Kuwait are currently engaged in ongoing consultations aimed at developing a structured bilateral agreement to regulate labour migration.

These discussions are expected to establish safeguards, procedures, and mechanisms that ensure safe and orderly labour mobility while protecting the welfare of Kenyan workers abroad.

The Labour Ministry also reiterated that Kuwait remains an important destination for Kenyan migrant workers across various sectors, and that existing engagements aim to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

The clarification comes amid growing public concern and misinformation regarding overseas job opportunities, particularly in the Gulf region, which continues to be a key source of employment for many Kenyans seeking work abroad.
