WHO urges safe burials and faster response amid escalating Ebola outbreak in DRC
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has strongly criticised the Kenyan government over alleged secret talks with the United States to set up an Ebola quarantine and treatment centre at Laikipia Air Base.
The union argues that hosting infected or exposed US citizens during the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in Central Africa could jeopardise Kenya's public health and biosecurity.
KMPDU accused the government of prioritising foreign interests over local healthcare needs, noting that public hospitals are already underfunded and understaffed, with severe shortages of medicines, diagnostic tools, and intensive care facilities.
The union also raised concerns about the facility potentially being staffed mainly by US personnel, warning against what it described as an 'apartheid healthcare model'.It called for Kenyan healthcare workers to be employed with proper hazardous duty allowances and full medical cover.
KMPDU has demanded full transparency on the negotiations within 48 hours and threatened nationwide industrial action if the government proceeds without consulting the public and medical professionals. The union emphasised that Kenya is a sovereign nation, not a site for containing foreign pathogens.
