KP Chief Minister Seeks Judicial Oversight Over Alleged Electoral Irregularities in Gilgit-Baltistan
PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has formally written to the Chief Justice of Gilgit-Baltistan Supreme Appellate Court, Sardar Muhammad Shamim Khan, seeking judicial oversight to ensure a free, fair, and transparent general election in Gilgit-Baltistan scheduled for June 7.The KP CM highlighted that there are troubling reports regarding the political environment in GB ahead of the elections.
The concerns arose after PTI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter President Junaid Akbar and other party leaders were detained and later expelled from the region for allegedly violating election rules.
Additionally, PTI leader Asad Qaiser claimed that restrictions prevented him from reaching Islamabad airport for a flight to Skardu, hindering his participation in election campaigns.
Without mentioning any party by name, CM Afridi noted that a parliamentary political party is reportedly facing undue restrictions, including harassment, arbitrary arrests, and obstacles in political activities. He stressed that such actions, if not addressed, could undermine the integrity of the elections.
The Chief Minister urged the court to take action to ensure that all political parties can conduct their campaigns without interference, protecting the constitutional right of citizens and parties to fair electoral participation.GB is set to elect its 4th Legislative Assembly on June 7.
