A police warrant officer in KwaZulu-Natal has been arrested for allegedly aiding three suspects in escaping from the holding cells at KwaMsane police station.The incident occurred on 27 February 2024, when the suspects reportedly cut through steel bars and a roof iron sheet to flee custody.One of the escapees, Sibusiso Gumede, was later apprehended a month after the escape at a roadblock in Vryheid.
Police investigations by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit suggested that the officer provided the suspects with a steel saw and allegedly received a R5,000 bribe in return.The warrant officer was arrested on Friday, 29 May 2026, following a court-issued arrest warrant.He faces charges including aiding and abetting suspects to escape lawful custody, defeating the ends of justice, and corruption.The accused is scheduled to appear at the KwaMsane Magistrate’s Court on 2 June 2026.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about corruption and misconduct within law enforcement, with authorities emphasising the seriousness of officers compromising the justice system for personal gain.
