Landfill Fire and Health Concerns in Howick Amid Mismanagement

Residents of Howick, part of the uMngeni municipality, are grappling with health concerns due to toxic fumes from a landfill fire that has been smoldering since July 4.

The incident highlights years of mismanagement at Curry’s Post Road landfill, which is now facing challenges in fully extinguishing the blaze despite efforts involving water tankers and excavating equipment.Landfill monitoring committee member Piet le Roux confirmed that while progress is being made, some areas remain smoldering.Residents report a strong toxic smell, with some even resorting to sealing windows or using air purifiers.

The landfill, already at capacity, has a proposed new site 2km away, but environmental processes and public participation are required before development can proceed. The municipality estimates the project will cost between R110m and R150m, far beyond its financial capacity without provincial support.Past issues include illegal waste disposal by commercial operators, leading to shortened landfill lifespan. This incident follows a previous fire in 2023, underscoring ongoing challenges with site management and compliance.
