In Laos’ Xaisomboun province, five men trapped in a cave for 11 days after heavy rains flooded the tunnels managed to escape on their own, crawling through nearly 850 feet of narrow, waterlogged passages.

The survivors, who had initially entered the cave to search for gold, endured harsh conditions, including cold water, low oxygen, and hunger, relying on determination and mutual support to survive.Rescue teams had previously reached one man using diving equipment, while the others waited for safer conditions.The escape shocked rescuers and highlighted the courage of the trapped men.The ordeal emphasized the challenges of informal mining in remote areas of Laos, where villagers risk dangerous conditions for economic survival.Although these five men were freed, two others remain missing in the cave system.
