Lars Ulrich, drummer of Metallica, has shared his admiration for U2’s groundbreaking performance at the Las Vegas Sphere, which inspired the band to embark on their own residency at the venue.
Speaking during a SiriusXM interview with The Edge, Ulrich described being 'awestruck and inspired' by the Irish band's opening night show, calling it 'another frontier' in live music.This experience has influenced Metallica’s upcoming 24-night residency at the Sphere, which will run from October 2026 to March 2027.The residency, initially planned for eight dates, expanded due to overwhelming fan demand.Ulrich acknowledged the challenge of performing in such a high-tech venue but expressed excitement about the opportunity.
The Sphere’s advanced technology, including massive 16K screens and cutting-edge sound systems, has attracted major acts like U2, Phish, and the Eagles.Metallica’s residency follows their recent 'M72' tour, which concluded with shows in London, Dublin, Glasgow, and Cardiff.The band also highlighted their community efforts, such as collaborating with UK blood services and donating to a Cardiff foodbank.
Their latest album, '72 Seasons', released in 2023, continues to resonate with fans, while their live performances blend classic hits with unexpected covers.
