Liverpool have dismissed head coach Arne Slot after two seasons in charge, despite his earlier success in delivering the club’s 20th league title in his debut campaign.

The decision follows a disappointing second season in which the team finished fifth in the Premier League with just 60 points, their lowest total in nearly a decade and 25 points behind champions Arsenal.Although Liverpool still qualified for the Champions League, the club’s leadership concluded that a change in direction was necessary.

Fenway Sports Group acknowledged Slot’s achievements and professionalism, emphasising that the decision was not a reflection of his ability but rather a strategic shift towards a more aggressive and urgent style of play.The move was led by chief executive Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes after a post-season review.Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Slot.The Spaniard, widely respected for his attacking philosophy, has already been approached by Liverpool.

Iraola previously worked with Hughes during his time at Bournemouth and recently guided the club to a Europa League place, finishing just behind Liverpool in the table.Slot had taken over from Jurgen Klopp in 2024 following the German’s long and successful tenure.
