Liverpool are preparing to begin formal discussions with Andoni Iraola as they accelerate their search for a new head coach following the dismissal of Arne Slot.The club’s hierarchy has identified the Spanish manager as a leading candidate, with hopes of securing a swift appointment ahead of the new season.

Iraola, who most recently managed Bournemouth, is considered well suited to Liverpool’s desire for a more urgent and aggressive playing style, which was highlighted during their end-of-season review of Slot’s tenure.

Slot, who had overseen a difficult campaign that saw Liverpool finish fifth in the Premier League with 60 points and suffer 19 defeats across all competitions, was relieved of his duties after just one season in charge.

In response, Liverpool have moved quickly to assess alternatives, with VfB Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness and Lens coach Pierre Sage also under consideration.However, Iraola is viewed as the frontrunner due to his availability and proven track record in English football.

During his time at Bournemouth, Iraola guided the club to a sixth-place finish, their highest ever Premier League position, earning widespread praise for his high-intensity tactical approach.

He previously worked with Liverpool’s left-back Milos Kerkez during his spell on the south coast and was originally scouted by Liverpool’s director of football Richard Hughes during his time at Bournemouth.

Despite Liverpool’s strong interest, they face competition from AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen and Crystal Palace, all of whom are monitoring his situation closely.Some of Slot’s backroom staff are also expected to depart Anfield as part of the wider managerial transition.
