Louvre Reopens Apollo Gallery After Security Enhancements Following Heist

The Louvre Museum in Paris officially reopened its Apollo Gallery to the public on Wednesday, marking the first time since a high-profile $100-million heist last year. The gallery, one of the museum’s most iconic spaces, remains devoid of its prized jewels due to heightened security measures.

The theft occurred in July 2025 when masked thieves used a basket lift and grinders to break into the second-floor gallery, smashing two display cases and stealing crown jewels valued at 88 million euros.

Despite the museum’s efforts to bolster security, including new surveillance cameras and anti-intrusion systems, the stolen jewels have not been recovered.

The museum’s director, Christophe Leribault, emphasized the importance of rediscovering the gallery’s historic architecture and decor, while French Culture Minister Catherine Pégard praised the reopening as a symbol of resilience.

The incident has sparked broader discussions about museum security, with critics highlighting the need for improved safeguards against such high-value thefts.
