LPG Importers Association Warns of Potential National Gas Shortage and Calls for Sustainable Pricing Framework

The LPG Importers Association of Pakistan (LPGIAP) has issued a warning about an impending nationwide liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shortage if the government does not act swiftly.

In a letter to Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, LPGIAP Chairman Sheikh Mukarram Waheed highlighted that the current pricing mechanism fails to reflect actual import costs, leading to significant financial losses for importers.

The letter emphasized that international prices, freight charges, exchange rate fluctuations, and operational expenses have pushed import costs far above the notified selling price.Several importers and storage operators have already reduced or suspended operations due to these losses.

The association urged the government to prioritize the issue and establish a transparent, sustainable pricing framework to ensure energy security and market stability.

Despite recent price reductions by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra), LPG retailers in Lahore, Multan, and Muzaffargarh continue to sell at higher rates, indicating that the official cuts have not translated into market relief. The situation threatens uninterrupted supplies across the country if the pricing mechanism remains unchanged.
