Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced that taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers who fail to clear a Marathi language test will have their licenses canceled starting August 16.The government initially mandated basic Marathi knowledge from May 1 but deferred implementation until August 15.Drivers will be assessed on reading Marathi signboards, writing sentences, and holding conversations.

Sarnaik also mentioned that bike taxi services will commence from August 1, requiring operators to submit domicile certificates to combat unauthorized entries.The policy aims to ensure compliance and reduce law enforcement challenges.The decision highlights the state's focus on language proficiency and regulation in transport sectors.

This move underscores the importance of local language skills for public service roles and addresses concerns about unregulated operators disrupting market order.
