Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has alleged that she was targeted in a mob attack in West Bengal's Nadia district, claiming that a group of protesters hurled eggs, mud, and stones at a party office where she was present.
She stated that she was effectively confined inside the office for nearly four hours during the incident in Kaliganj and accused the local police of remaining passive observers while the situation escalated.
Moitra later named 16 individuals whom she identified as BJP workers, alleging they were involved in the attack and shared their names publicly on social media, tagging senior police officials and seeking action.
According to her account, the mob gathered outside the Trinamool Congress office and continued to grow over several hours, creating a tense situation in which at least one egg reportedly struck her.She also claimed that the police failed to disperse the crowd in time.
However, the West Bengal Police and local district authorities rejected these allegations, stating that officers reached the site after receiving information and maintained communication with Moitra, eventually escorting her out safely around evening time.
The BJP strongly denied involvement, with its state leadership suggesting that the incident could be linked to internal conflicts within the Trinamool Congress rather than external political violence. The party also criticised the allegations as politically motivated.
Meanwhile, several TMC leaders condemned the incident, calling it an attack on a sitting Member of Parliament and raising concerns over law and order in the state.
The episode has triggered a political controversy between the TMC and BJP, with accusations and counter-accusations over responsibility and police conduct in the incident.
