Chhattisgarh High Court clarifies that government school students cannot be forced to recite religious prayers
A man accused of murdering Sumithra Bai in 2019 was convicted by a Chikkamagaluru court and sentenced to seven years' rigorous imprisonment along with a ₹50,000 fine.Kumar Naik, the convict, killed Bai in Bavikere, Tarikere taluk, following a dispute over a financial transaction.The Second District and Sessions Court convicted him under Section 304(1) of the Indian Penal Code.The fine imposes an additional six months' imprisonment if unpaid.The court also mandated compensation to the victim's family under the Victim Compensation Scheme.Police Inspector H.S.Suresh filed the charge sheet, while Public Prosecutor Bhavana represented the prosecution.Chikkamagaluru Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Dayama praised the police team's efforts in securing the conviction.The case highlights the legal process of addressing crimes and ensuring justice for victims' families.
