President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s administration has made significant progress toward its 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA) pledge to build 40,000 new classrooms by June 2028.

As of June 2026, the Department of Education (DepEd) reported that 21,900 classrooms have been completed through projects managed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) since June 2022.This achievement leaves approximately 18,100 classrooms remaining to fulfill the commitment.DepEd remains optimistic about meeting the target, provided current funding levels are maintained and procurement processes stay on schedule.

The department emphasized that addressing the classroom shortage requires not only construction but also ensuring new facilities are equipped with essential infrastructure like furniture, water and sanitation, digital connectivity, and accessibility features.The nationwide classroom backlog, estimated at 143,543 as of June 2026, has decreased from 165,443 at the start of the administration.However, DepEd noted that the backlog figure is still being refined as enrollment data and site conditions are validated.
