Police use familial DNA techniques to investigate suspected serial rapist linked to two attacks in south-east London
A cast member from the reality television programme Married at First Sight UK has been arrested on suspicion of rape following allegations highlighted in a BBC Panorama investigation.
The individual involved has not been named, and the alleged victim has also been granted anonymity, in line with legal protections for those reporting sexual assault.
According to reporting, the Panorama programme broadcast in May brought forward allegations from two female participants who claimed they had been raped by fellow cast members, while a third woman alleged a non-consensual sexual act.All of the men accused have denied the allegations made against them.
Following the broadcast, the Metropolitan Police encouraged anyone who believes they may have been a victim of sexual assault connected to their participation in the show to come forward. The police have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing and that the arrested individual has been released on bail while enquiries continue. The case has prompted wider scrutiny of welfare procedures within reality television production.Channel 4, which broadcasts the UK version of Married at First Sight, has commissioned a review into contributor welfare on the programme.
The broadcaster temporarily removed episodes from its streaming platform ahead of the Panorama investigation’s airing and has yet to confirm whether the latest filmed series will be broadcast.A summary of the welfare review findings is expected later this summer. The production company behind the show has defended its safeguarding measures, describing them as industry-leading and of a high standard.
However, the allegations raised by participants and the subsequent police investigation have intensified debate over participant safety in reality television formats that involve intense interpersonal relationships and rapid romantic pairings between strangers.
