Meta Introduces Paid Subscription Plan for Advanced Smart Glasses Features

Meta is rolling out a new subscription model for its smart glasses, including Ray-Ban, Oakley, and Meta-branded devices, under a plan called Meta One Premium Plan.

The subscription will unlock expanded access to certain advanced features while keeping the glasses functional for non-subscribers, though with limitations.

One of the key features affected is Conversation Focus, which enhances the audio of a person you are speaking with, making it easier to hear conversations in noisy environments.Users will receive up to three hours per month of this feature for free.Beyond that allowance, continued use requires a paid subscription, with a maximum cap of 15 hours per month even for paying users. In addition to extended feature access, subscribers will receive Premium Device Support. This includes faster assistance from what Meta describes as human experts trained specifically on its smart glasses ecosystem.Meta has emphasized that this subscription is not an artificial intelligence rate limit system.

Unlike typical AI usage caps that reset monthly, Conversation Focus runs directly on-device rather than through cloud processing, meaning usage tracking is handled locally and users are notified when they approach their monthly limit.

Meta spokespersons stated that the subscription is intended to support ongoing development and provide enhanced access for power users, along with improved support services.

The company also confirmed that this is part of a broader experiment with optional subscription tiers across its apps and AI-powered wearable devices.

The move reflects a growing industry trend toward monetizing advanced features in consumer hardware through recurring payments, raising questions about long-term access to device capabilities without additional fees.
