Minegoziibe Anishinabe First Nation declares emergency amid severe flooding in Manitoba’s Parkland region

Minegoziibe Anishinabe First Nation, also known as Pine Creek First Nation, in Manitoba’s flood-affected Parkland region has declared a state of emergency after severe overland flooding damaged infrastructure and cut off access to essential services.

The community, located roughly 320 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg near Lake Winnipegosis, has been left effectively landlocked after Highway 20, which connects it to Camperville and Dauphin, was closed due to flooding and washouts.Additional road closures to the west have further isolated the community, leaving it in what local leadership described as a precarious situation.

Chief Derek Nepinak stated that the community is unable to reliably access emergency services or nearby regional centres, prompting the establishment of a temporary emergency drop-in centre at the community hall, which is equipped with backup power. While evacuations are not currently planned, officials have indicated that this could change if weather conditions worsen.

The situation has become part of a broader regional emergency, with more than 30 communities across Manitoba’s Parkland area declaring states of emergency due to widespread flooding.

Elsewhere in the region, the town of Swan River is also experiencing severe impacts, including partial mandatory evacuation orders and disrupted highway access.Local officials have warned that supplies such as food and fuel may need to be airlifted in.

The mayor described conditions as extremely difficult, noting that some residents have lost homes and that critical infrastructure like roads and bridges outside the town has been heavily damaged.Provincial officials report that dozens of roads are affected across the region.

Local leaders are urging additional support, including sandbags, pumps, and potential military assistance, as volunteers and emergency workers face exhaustion after weeks of ongoing flood response efforts.
