Dar es Salaam — Tanzania has taken a big step to improve healthcare access for wananchi in remote and underserved areas with the launch of the country's first mobile surgical theatre by Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH).The 1.
19 billion/- shilling mobile unit is equipped with modern surgical and diagnostic tools, allowing specialist doctors to perform minor operations, emergency procedures, and medical screenings directly in local communities.The initiative is designed to reduce the need for patients to travel long distances to referral hospitals, saving time and transport costs.
Deputy Minister for Health, Dr Florence Samizi, explained that this move will bring healthcare closer to wananchi and help ease congestion in major hospitals.The mobile theatre can handle services such as tumour removal for biopsy, ultrasound examinations, and other minor surgeries.It will also be used during outreach programmes for school children and patients with heart conditions or other specialised needs.
MNH Executive Director, Dr Delilah Kimambo, highlighted that the unit will strengthen emergency responses during accidents or disasters and provide timely medical attention for rural communities facing logistical challenges.
The Sukos Kova Foundation facilitated the acquisition of the mobile theatre from China, reflecting international cooperation in improving Tanzania's healthcare delivery.Ms Rahma Kova, director of the foundation, encouraged wananchi to make full use of the services whenever the unit visits their area.
This mobile surgical theatre represents a significant step in making specialised healthcare more accessible to all Tanzanians, especially those living far from major hospitals.
