The Montreal Victoire captured their first Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) Walter Cup championship on Wednesday, defeating the Ottawa Charge 4-0 in Game 4 of the best-of-five series.Abby Roque led the way with two goals, including a game-winning goal in the second period and a short-handed goal in the third.This victory marks the first time a Canadian team has claimed the PWHL title in the league's three-year history.
Marie-Philip Poulin, captain of the Victoire, was named the Ilana Kloss Playoff MVP after tying for the post-season points lead with eight points (two goals and six assists).Goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens earned her second playoff shutout with 23 saves.Montreal had earlier defeated the two-time defending champions, the Minnesota Frost, in the semifinals.
Although Ottawa won Game 3 to stave off a sweep, the Charge struggled on power plays, failing to score on three opportunities in Game 4 and going 0-for-10 across the series.Montreal’s depth was on full display in the third period with goals from Maggie Flaherty and Lina Ljungblom, securing the championship.The win highlights the growth of Canadian talent in the PWHL and sets a new milestone for women's professional hockey in Canada.
