NASA Outlines Phased Plan to Establish a Lunar Base at the Moon’s South Pole

NASA has unveiled a detailed plan to build a permanent lunar base at the Moon's south pole, prioritizing surface operations over the previously planned Gateway orbital station. The project will be executed in three phases over the next decade.Phase one, from 2026 to 2029, focuses on robotic missions and technological testing, including at least 25 missions and 21 surface landings.

Blue Origin’s Blue Moon Mark 1 Endurance lander will be tested in late 2026 to validate navigation and landing technologies, though it will not carry astronauts.

Phase two, starting in 2029, involves assembling semipermanent infrastructure, including habitat modules, energy systems, and communication networks, with up to 60 tons of cargo delivered in 24 missions.

Phase three will expand the infrastructure into a sustainable lunar base with habitations, power, roads, and continuous astronaut rotation, aiming to ship roughly 38 tons of cargo annually for maintenance and growth.

NASA emphasizes that each mission will contribute to learning and technological advancement, supporting scientific research, economic development, and preparation for future deep-space exploration.Administrator Jared Isaacman highlights the dual goal of gaining lunar knowledge and leveraging innovations to benefit Earth.
