National Liquor Traders Call for Industry-Wide Collaboration to Address Safety Concerns Post-Enyobeni Inquest

The National Liquor Traders (NLT) have called for urgent collaboration between government regulators, law enforcement agencies, and the liquor industry to address systemic safety failures following the Enyobeni Tavern inquest.

The Mdantsane Regional Court's ruling found prima facie evidence to prosecute tavern owners, a former bouncer, and an inspector over the 2022 incident that claimed 21 lives.

While acknowledging the legal process is not complete, the NLT emphasized that every licensed liquor outlet must adhere to South Africa's laws to ensure patron safety. They condemned underage alcohol sales, overcrowding, and unsafe trading conditions as unacceptable practices.

The organization argued that preventing future tragedies requires collective action beyond individual accountability, including stronger enforcement of existing regulations, improved oversight mechanisms, and investment in training for tavern owners. The NLT also highlighted the importance of education campaigns to curb underage drinking and promote responsible consumption.

They stressed that most licensed operators are law-abiding contributors to communities but must hold those who disregard the law accountable through legal channels.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) echoed these calls, urging reforms to alcohol laws and systemic changes to protect children and reduce harm. The case will now be referred to the National Prosecuting Authority for potential criminal charges.
