The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has reiterated its commitment to probing alleged corruption in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games despite Senator Alan Peter Cayetano's recent derogatory remarks labeling NBI Director Melvin Matibag as a 'minion.' In a statement, the NBI emphasized that its work is grounded in evidence and legal mandates, dismissing name-calling as irrelevant.

Cayetano, who chaired the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) during the event, accused Matibag of attempting to intimidate him ahead of his Senate testimony in Sara Duterte's impeachment trial.

The NBI clarified that its investigation is driven by public accountability, highlighting concerns over billions in government funds allegedly mismanaged during the games.

It stressed that the inquiry is impartial and based on facts, inviting anyone with relevant information—including Cayetano—to provide evidence to the bureau rather than airing grievances publicly.

The probe also extends to PHISGOC's financial dealings, as the committee received around P2 billion in public funds without proper audits or liquidation.The NBI's stance underscores its dedication to transparency and justice, regardless of political pressures.
