According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) report for the academic year 2023-24, Nepal has emerged as the largest source of international students studying in India.The neighbouring country accounts for a significant 24.1 percent of all foreign enrolments in Indian higher education institutions.This data highlights the strong educational ties between the two nations.A total of 58,134 international students from 173 different countries enrolled in various universities and colleges across India during this period.

Karnataka has become the preferred destination state for these foreign students, hosting the highest number with 7,914 enrolments, followed closely by Punjab with 7,902 students.Other prominent states include Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.The majority of these international students, around 73.6 percent, have opted for undergraduate programmes, while postgraduate courses attract about 16.8 percent.

The report also indicates a steady rise in foreign student enrolment over the past five years, increasing by nearly 19 percent from 2019-20 to 2023-24.

This growth reflects India's growing appeal as a hub for higher education, supported by initiatives like the Study in India programme launched by the Ministry of Education.

Students from countries such as the United Arab Emirates, United States, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe also form notable portions of the international student community.

The AISHE report serves as a crucial tool for policymakers to understand trends in higher education and plan accordingly for better infrastructure and opportunities.
