Support for Trump Among Latino Business Owners Declines Amid Concerns Over Immigration Policies and Tariffs
John Alite, a Republican member of the Englishtown Borough Council in New Jersey, has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses related to an alleged illegal lending operation.
According to charges announced by New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, Alite allegedly issued loans that exceeded legal interest rate limits and later used threats of violence to collect money and property from borrowers. The charges against him include theft by extortion, corporate misconduct, usury, and terroristic threats.Prosecutors also allege that he used his company, Straightened-Out Entertainment, as part of the scheme.
Davenport stated that businesses are expected to operate within the law and that authorities will pursue those who engage in fraudulent or coercive conduct. The case has drawn significant attention because of Alite’s well-known criminal past.
Before entering local politics, Alite was associated with the Gambino crime family and worked closely with notorious mob figures John Gotti and John Gotti Jr.He reportedly earned the nickname 'the Calculator' due to his role in managing criminal finances and drug trafficking operations. After being arrested in Brazil, Alite cooperated with U.S.authorities and later pleaded guilty to racketeering offenses that included involvement in two murders. He served approximately 14 years in prison before being released. In recent years, he publicly presented himself as a reformed individual, speaking about his past and promoting a message of rehabilitation.
When appointed to the Englishtown council in 2025, Alite stated that he was no longer involved in criminal activity and wanted to contribute positively to public service. The new charges now place that claim under renewed scrutiny as the legal proceedings move forward.
