Labrador, Pangasinan designates July 12 as West Philippine Sea Victory Day to mark 2016 arbitral ruling
Newly appointed United States Ambassador to the Philippines Lee Lipton has expressed strong commitment to further strengthening the long-standing alliance between the United States and the Philippines during his first public appearance in Manila.
The reception, held in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, marked the celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence and also served as Lipton’s first major engagement after presenting his credentials to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.In his remarks, Lipton said he is honored to be appointed and expressed enthusiasm in elevating bilateral relations to new heights.
He emphasized that the United States is planning to expand cooperation with the Philippines beyond traditional defense ties, highlighting areas such as business development, job creation, investments, and development assistance.His statement reflects Washington’s continued interest in deepening its engagement with Manila amid evolving regional security challenges.
The event also underscored the enduring defense partnership between the two countries, which remains anchored on the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT), the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), and the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA).
These frameworks have supported increased military interoperability, including large-scale joint exercises such as the Balikatan drills, which recently involved around 17,000 personnel from the Philippines, the United States, and partner nations.
Philippine officials, including representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs, reiterated the importance of these agreements in maintaining regional stability, particularly in the West Philippine Sea.
The reception was also attended by diplomats from allied countries such as Japan, as well as Filipino lawmakers including Senators Risa Hontiveros and Erwin Tulfo.
Overall, the event highlighted the strengthening network of alliances supporting the Philippines’ defense and economic priorities in the Indo-Pacific region.
