NFP tribunal confirms expulsion of KZN MEC Mbali Shinga after disciplinary proceedings

The National Freedom Party (NFP) has finalised its internal disciplinary process regarding KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga. The party's appeals tribunal has dismissed Shinga’s appeal, confirming her guilt of gross insubordination and misconduct, and upholding her expulsion.

The disciplinary measures arose from Shinga’s refusal to back a no-confidence motion against KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli and her defiance of NFP instructions to vacate her provincial legislature seat. The conflict escalated after the NFP withdrew from the KwaZulu-Natal government of provincial unity.

Despite being given the opportunity to appeal, the tribunal, after reviewing submissions from both sides, found no procedural errors or legal grounds to overturn the original decision.

The ruling reaffirmed the National Executive Committee’s (NEC) authority, the fairness of disciplinary and appeals processes, and the importance of adherence to party constitution and democratic principles. The NFP emphasised that no member, regardless of position, is above party rules or South African law.

The party considers the matter concluded and calls for unity among members, stressing collective leadership and democratic accountability, while reaffirming its commitment to serving communities and strengthening governance.
