Ngorongoro Crater named Tripadvisor Best of the Best and top-rated attraction in Africa for 2026

Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania has received major international recognition after being named a Tripadvisor Traveller’s Choice – Best of the Best Award winner for 2026, confirming its status as one of the world’s leading tourism destinations.

The announcement was made by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority in Dar es Salaam on May 29, 2026, marking an important achievement for Tanzania’s tourism industry.

The award places Ngorongoro among an elite group of global attractions that consistently receive outstanding reviews from millions of travellers on the Tripadvisor platform.

According to the report, the Best of the Best Award is Tripadvisor’s highest level of recognition and is only given to destinations that maintain exceptional ratings and positive visitor experiences throughout the year.

Ngorongoro Crater was also ranked as Africa’s top-rated attraction for 2026, showing its strong appeal to international tourists from different regions and backgrounds. The crater itself is one of the most remarkable natural wonders in the world, formed after a massive volcanic eruption millions of years ago.It is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, covering about 260 square kilometres and hosting a very high concentration of wildlife.Visitors can see animals such as lions, elephants, zebras, flamingos, and the endangered black rhinoceros within a relatively small area.

The surrounding Ngorongoro Conservation Area is also home to the Maasai people, who continue their traditional pastoral lifestyle while living alongside wildlife conservation efforts. This unique coexistence highlights both cultural heritage and environmental protection in the region.Authorities say the recognition supports ongoing conservation work, including controlled tourism access and habitat protection measures.

The award is expected to boost Tanzania’s visibility in global tourism markets, attract more visitors, and encourage further investment in tourism infrastructure. It also strengthens Tanzania’s position alongside other major attractions like Serengeti, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar.
