Middle Belt Tigers emerge inaugural champions of Nigeria Super League
A 13-member Team Nigeria contingent has officially begun its participation at the 2026 African Taekwondo Championships holding in Bamako, Mali.The squad includes both Kyorugi fighters and, for the first time, Para athletes and Poomsae competitors, marking a significant expansion in Nigeria’s representation at the continental event.The competition commenced after the official weigh-in on Friday, with the main events starting on Saturday.
Nigeria Taekwondo Federation President, Tayo Popoola, expressed strong confidence in the athletes, stating that the team is well-prepared and adequately supported by the Federal Government.
She highlighted that this is the first time Nigeria is sending such a large and diverse contingent, which reflects the steady development of taekwondo in the country.According to her, the inclusion of Para and Poomsae athletes shows progress and innovation within the federation’s programmes.
Popoola also emphasised the importance of Kukkiwon Dan certification, noting that it is a key requirement for international eligibility and has been completed to ensure the athletes can compete at global standards.
She added that the federation’s long-term vision is to build a competitive team capable of winning medals at future African Games and qualifying for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The Nigerian team includes athletes across different weight categories and disciplines such as Salawudeen Abdulafeez, Aderibigbe Faridah, Faisal Hamidu, Chidinma Okoko, and others, alongside Para competitors like Ability Matthew Udo and Faster Bakare.Coaches John Victor and Santos Akhilele are leading the technical crew.The federation hopes the team’s exposure in Mali will strengthen their performance and experience on the continental stage.
